Andros news - be always the first to know
College of The Bahamas President, Janyne Hodder, welcomed Mr Pasi Patokallio, the Finnish Ambassador to Canada and The Bahamas, when he paid a courtesy call on Manday 9th, July. Mr Patokallio was in Nassau to enjoy the 34th Independence celebrations and to visit Grand Bahama and Harbour Island. Mrs Hodder and the Ambassador met for forty-five minutes, during which time they discussed, among many other topics, The College's desire to establish exchange agreements with universities around the world. Mr Patokallio was very interested in those areas of expertise that would especially benefit an exchange student coming to The College of The Bahamas and the President informed him that our Banking and Finance and Hospitality and Tourism programmes are particularly strong. Embracing the opportunity to give the Ambassador a brief history of The College, President Hodder told him that it was apposite that he should visit us during the independence celebrations as The College of The Bahamas was born as a result of the granting of independence to The Bahamas back in 1973. She went on to describe the growth of The College and the desire to become a full university. Mr Patokallio, who speaks immaculate English, spoke of the great emphasis placed on all levels of education in his home land. He also contrasted the main industries of Finland and those of The Bahamas. He said that Finland's economy was based on manufacturing and mentioned Nokia cellular phones that are made there. He also commented that while he was in Grand Bahama visiting the Freeport container port, he noticed that a number of the large cranes in operation there had been manufactured in Finland.
