Andros travel guide and vacation resources
Andros Island is full of activities to do in and out of the water. Whether it's fishing for trophy-size fish, exploring ancient ruins, bird-watching, hunting for buried treasure, meandering through quaint coastal towns and villages, shopping for batik fabrics or simply soaking up the tropical sunshine, Andros Island has something for everyone. It is a naturalist's wonderland, thanks to numerous deserted beaches, "blue holes" (fresh and salt water filled caves found inland and in the ocean, respectively), pine forests, mangrove marsh and the carefully protected fresh water reservoir. Visitors may tour the Forfar Field Station in Blanket Sound, an international research facility for studies in tropical ecology and marine biology, which offers inland hikes and offshore expeditions. A nature trail explores the island's flora and fauna and medicinal plants. Guided nature walks, kayaking and birding tours can be arranged through a number of hotels or the Andros Tourist Office. Since most of Andros is underwater and undeveloped, visitors can explore an ecosystem that has been virtually untouched over time. An ecotour on Andros Island provides an up-close look at its beautiful ecosystem, including underwater caves, the third-largest barrier reef in the world, the fifth-largest landmass in the Caribbean, the world's largest concentration of blue holes, land crabs, and bone-fishing flats. Andros is also home to the largest native terrestrial vertebrate in The Islands of The Bahamas, an eye-catching iguana with unusual nesting habits. The Andros Iguana weighs more than 20 lbs., and has a length of more than 50 inches. It is the only iguana in the world that deposits its eggs in termite mounds, then sits there to guard the nest. Despite the mother's best efforts, though, many of the eggs are eaten by snakes and crabs; only one in 20 of the young iguanas survive. All iguanas are protected in The Bahamas and it is illegal to hunt or capture them. In addition, visitors who encounter iguanas should not feed them, as it could harm their sensitive digestive systems.
